After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Select the appropriate personal protective equipment for responding to an incident involving hazardous materials.
  • Use monitoring equipment to evaluate the hazards present at a hazardous materials incident.
  • Use confinement and containment techniques to control the release of a hazardous material.
  • Identify the importance of an incident command system for effectively managing an incident involving hazardous materials.
  • Develop procedures for the decontamination of emergency response personnel.
  • Use size-up techniques to develop strategies and select the appropriate tactics for mitigating hazardous material incidents.

This course meets and or exceeds CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) and NFPA 472 Requirements

 

Class Dates:   J         February 5-9, 2018
Prerequisite: To attend this course, you will need a medical evaluation in accordance with the Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134. This is necessary in order to attend this course. Each student MUST have a letter from their supervisor OR a copy of a medical certificate that clearly states that a medical evaluation has been completed and that the student is medically able to wear respiratory protection equipment. This evaluation should be emailed to Richard Browning (Richard.Browning@LA.gov) OR Faxed to (225) 664-8327 within 2 weeks of registration.

Training Hours: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Course Fees: FREE for Louisiana and Federal First Responders
Dress Code: Students should bring comfortable clothes as they will be dressing out in chemical protective clothing each day; Monday – Friday.
Required Equipment: All equipment will be provided.

Firefighters are asked to bring their bunker gear for scenario training.

Meals and lodging are provided by the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant for guests staying at the Staff Development Center.  Rooms are reserved for students living more than 50 miles from JESTC.  For room reservations please send your request to Allison.Fontentot@la.gov or 225-658-7272.  Include name, sex, check in / out dates, and roommate preference.
Airport: The nearest Airport to the Academy is the Baton Rouge Metro Airport which is approximately 10 miles south of the Joint Emergency Services Training Center.
